Independent Vet – Industry-Led Platform for Independent Veterinary Clinics

The Challenge

Independent Vet was not a traditional client brief. It was a platform DeCODE Digital chose to build after seeing, first-hand, the growing challenges facing independently owned veterinary clinics across Australia.

As corporate consolidation accelerated within the veterinary industry, many independent clinics were finding it harder to differentiate themselves, communicate their values, and compete with larger groups that had far greater marketing budgets and brand recognition. At the same time, pet owners were often unaware whether their local clinic was independently owned or part of a corporate network.

The opportunity was to create a platform that supported independent clinics, gave them visibility, and helped educate pet owners on the difference between independent and corporate veterinary care.

Strategy & Purpose

The strategy behind Independent Vet was twofold.

First, it needed to act as a central directory for independently owned veterinary clinics, making it easy for pet owners to find and support clinics that align with their values.

Second, it needed to clearly communicate why independent ownership matters, without sounding adversarial or political. The messaging had to be balanced, informative, and respectful of the industry, while still advocating for choice, transparency, and community-based care.

This required careful content structure and tone, ensuring the platform felt credible and supportive rather than promotional.

Platform Build & Structure

The website was built using DeCODE’s standard, scalable technology stack, allowing for future growth in both content and functionality.

Key sections include:

• A searchable directory of independent veterinary clinics
• Educational content explaining ownership models and what they mean for pet care
• Clear pathways for clinics to register and participate
• Resources designed to support ongoing content and industry discussion

The structure allows clinics to be added easily, information to remain current, and the platform to grow organically over time.

Design & User Experience

The design of Independent Vet was intentionally clean and approachable. The aim was to feel trustworthy and neutral, appealing to both pet owners and veterinary professionals.

Navigation is simple and intuitive, allowing users to quickly understand the purpose of the platform and find relevant information without friction. The site is fully mobile responsive, recognising that many users will discover clinics while searching on their phones.

Search, Visibility & Growth

Search performance was built into the platform from the outset. Content was structured to align with how pet owners search for veterinary services locally, while also supporting broader educational queries around independent care.

This positions Independent Vet as both a discovery tool and an information resource, increasing its relevance in search and supporting long-term organic traffic growth.

The backend is highly editable, allowing the platform to expand into new regions, add features, and publish new resources without needing structural changes.

The Outcome

Independent Vet is now a purpose-driven digital platform that supports independent veterinary clinics and gives pet owners greater transparency and choice.

Rather than acting as a static directory, the site functions as a growing ecosystem, designed to support an industry segment that often lacks the digital presence and advocacy of larger corporate groups.

It’s a strong example of how a well-considered digital platform can support an industry, not just a single business.
